The Gestalt Principles of visual perception explain how we make sense of different visual components as part of a whole. These principles were determined in the 1920s by psychologists Max Wertheimer, Kurt Koffka and Wolfgang Kohler, who in their studies observed that we tend to perceive objects as organized patterns and elements.
No matter what your role in your team is, whether you are a UX, UI or graphic designer, or prepare presentations, Gestalt principles can help communicate your message more effectively whilst decreasing the cognitive load of your audience.

Occasionally, our perception "tricks" us so that we can quickly organize what we see. Learning the Gestalt Principles ("Gestalt", from the German word “forms” or “unified whole”) can help us create visual messages that strongly impact our users.

When we look at this image, we perceive two triangles, though in reality there aren't any. Our brain interprets visual stimuli based on the shapes and forms that we already know, which allows us to see what (apparently) doesn't exist. Pretty cool, huh?
Using Gestalt Principles is fundamental to the design process. They are applicable to any type of visual communication, no matter what your role in the team is. Inform your design, develop solutions for people, and apply the Gestalt principles to impact and improve your users' experience.
